Carini abandoned the fight in tears within the first minute after taking an early heavy blow and later refused to shake her opponent's hand. Footage from the match went viral, with some online commentators claiming that the athlete was a transgender woman. This stems from the boxer failing the International Boxing Association's gender eligibility test in 2023. The International Olympics Committee has disputed the conclusions reached by the IBA.
