This time, McCarthy's dissenters backed Representative Byron Donalds for speaker. The chaos has been a troubling sign for the GOP, raising questions about how the party will govern over the next two years. It was the first time in a century that a speaker was not elected on the first round.

Kevin McCarthy failed to secure the 218 votes necessary to win. By the end of the day, 20 Republicans had cast protest votes against McCarthy.

Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, went into cardiac arrest on Monday, January 2 after tackling wide receiver Tee Higgins during the game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin remains in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and the NFL suspended the game. Jim Harbaugh is expected to leave Michigan if offered a job, multiple sources told Bruce Feldman. The NFLPA filed a grievance against both the league and the Panthers regarding "the hardness of the playing field"

Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during the first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, January 2, and he is currently in critical condition. Hamlin collided with Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins while attempting to make a tackle. After the hard hit, Hamlin got up off the ground, stood in place for a moment and then collapsed. The NFL needs to do the right by Hamlin and his family by not continuing.
