That effectively struck down the court's landmark 1973 Roe ruling that provided a constitutional right to abortion nationwide. Michigan retains a pre-Roe abortion ban law enacted in 1931 on its books.

The ruling removed any constitutional restriction on laws banning abortion procedures. At least 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion as a result of the decision, according to a study.
