On Friday, Fenster was convicted by the regime on charges of spreading false or inflammatory information, contacting illegal organizations, and violating immigration regulations. On Monday, his release was secured by former U.S. Ambassador and hostage negotiator Bill Richardson.

The FIA announced its verdict four hours after calling Verst Appen to the stewards’ office in the Interlagos paddock. Hamilton had already been hit with a five-place grid penalty for Sunday's main event after the engine was changed on his Mercedes.
