Kimberly Potter, 48, has been named as the police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright, 20, during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota on Sunday. Police had pulled Wright over for what they said were expired license plate tags; his family has denied that the tags were expired. When police ran his name, they realized he had an outstanding warrant, they said. When cops asked Wright to get out of the car, he did, but then got back into the car and tried to flee; that's when Potter shot him.

Kim Potter, a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, shot Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, in the chest after pulling him over for expired car tabs. Wright was due to face trial on a charge of attempted aggravated robbery - with a possible maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Police Chief Tim Gannon referred to the incident as an "accidental discharge" and that the officer who shot and killed Wright meant to grab their taser.

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliot announced on Tuesday that Police Chief Tim Gannon would also be resigning. The police chief has since claimed that Potter mistook her handgun for a non-lethal taser.
