Indian-Canadian Sikh separatist (1977–2023)
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was an India-born Canadian Sikh separatist leader involved with the Khalistan movement. He was wanted by Indian authorities and was designated a terrorist under India's Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, accused of plotting the murder of a Hindu priest in Punjab. In 2019, Nijjar took the leadership of a Sikh temple in Surrey, Canada and became an outspoken advocate of Sikh separatism. On 18 June 2023, Nijjar was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Sikh temple in British Columbia. As of September 2023, Canadian authorities have not made any arrests in connection with Nijjar's murder.
